Dong calculator: everyone’s share, and who owes whom
Enter each person’s name and how much they paid. The calculator works out everyone’s share in Toman and the fewest card transfers needed to settle up — for trips, restaurants, shared homes and get-togethers.
Who paid how much?
Leave the amount empty for anyone who didn’t pay. “In” means that person shares the cost.
Result
Enter what at least one person paid to see the shares and how to settle up.
How is dong calculated?
Dong is Persian for each person’s share of a shared cost. To work it out, add up everything that was spent, decide each person’s share, then subtract each person’s share from what they paid:
Each person’s share (equal split) = total spent ÷ number of people sharing
Each person’s balance = what they paid − their share
A positive balance means that person is owed money; a negative one means they owe. To settle up, the people who owe pay the people who are owed — the calculator pairs them so there are as few transfers as possible.
Example: a trip for four
- Ali paid 2,400,000 Toman for the stay and Maryam paid 1,200,000 Toman for food; Reza and Negar paid nothing.
- The total is 3,600,000 Toman, so each person’s share is 900,000 Toman.
- Ali is owed 1,500,000 Toman and Maryam 300,000 Toman; Reza and Negar each owe 900,000 Toman.
- To settle: Reza pays Ali 900,000 Toman, and Negar pays Ali 600,000 Toman and Maryam 300,000 Toman.
Common questions about splitting a bill
How is dong calculated?
Add up all the costs and divide by the number of people sharing them to get each person’s share. Anyone who paid more than their share is owed money, anyone who paid less owes it, and the people who owe pay the difference to the people who are owed.
What if several people paid?
Enter what each person paid next to their name. The calculator adds up the total itself and tells each person who owes exactly how much to pay whom, using as few transfers as possible.
What if someone didn’t share the cost?
Untick “In” for them. If they paid anything, the whole amount counts as owed to them, and they get no share of the cost.
The shares aren’t equal — what do I do?
Choose “By percentage” and enter each person’s percentage (they must add up to 100), or choose “Custom amounts” and enter each person’s share in Toman (they must add up to the total).
What if the total doesn’t divide evenly?
Shares are rounded to whole Toman, and the few leftover Toman are added to the share of whoever paid the most — the same rule the dong app uses.
Is what I enter saved anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and the names and amounts are never sent to us; they’re only kept on this device so you don’t lose them if you close the page.
How is the calculator different from the dong app?
The calculator is for settling one bill quickly. In the dong app, expenses are logged as they happen during a trip or a month, everyone in the group sees the same numbers, settlements are recorded, and the history stays. Both are free.
Keep your next trip’s accounts in dong from day one
Whoever pays logs it on the spot, and at the end of the trip everyone already knows who owes what — no adding up, no arguments.
